Officers from the Kulim District Religious Office (PADK) arrested an unmarried couple who allegedly had committed khalwat (close proximity) at a rented unit in Kulim, Kedah.
They were caught during a surprise raid that was carried out in Taman Tiong not long after midnight today, reported Harian Metro.
Housemate lets officers in
According to PADK officer Anwar Sharifuddin Mat Saad, he said the team headed over to the house after receiving information about immoral activities taking place there.
He said that when officers knocked on the door, a woman believed to be a friend of the female suspect opened it and was surprised to see them.
“She told officers that she wasn’t aware that a man was in the house as she was in her room and allowed officers to carry out inspections.
“Officers eventually found the female suspect and discovered that her boyfriend was hiding in the bathroom,” said Anwar Sharifuddin.
Met each other online
Anwar Sharifuddin said the 22-year-old female suspect from Sarawak revealed that she met her boyfriend via social media four years ago.
He added the female suspect just started working at a company in Kulim and had been renting the house for four months with two friends, while the man works for a courier company.
As for her boyfriend, he claimed that he only came to hang out at the female suspect’s house from 9pm before getting caught by officers.
Face jail time & fine
Neither of the duo were able to produce documents showing they had a mahram (family) relationship or that they were married.
They were then taken to a nearby police station before being brought to the religious office to have their statements recorded.
The case is being investigated under Section 25(a)(b) of the Kedah Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment (EKJSK) 2014, where the duo can be fined up to RM3,000, jailed for up to two years, or both if convicted.
