A Malaysian contractor has gone viral for his respectful gesture after he relocated an abandoned “Datuk Gong” shrine found at a construction site, earning praise from netizens for upholding religious harmony.

Prioritizing respect over convenience

In a TikTok video circulating online posted by @cdbuilders.my, the Malay contractor discovered a neglected Datuk Gong shrine at his construction site.

Instead of discarding it, he decided to consult a local temple representative to find a proper solution.

After getting some advice, he carefully arranged for the shrine to be moved to a new location beside two other deity shrines, hoping it would bring prosperity to the area.

Getting consultation before moving

Speaking to WeirdKaya, the contractor shared that the house he was renovating previously belonged to a Chinese owner, who advised him to handle the shrine relocation properly.

Nearby my site got this tokong (Persatuan Ajaran Taoism Malaysia) at Sungai Buloh. I came here three times to look for someone, but this place was locked, and there was no one there.”

On his fourth visit, he finally met a monk who provided him with proper instructions on how to move the shrine. The monk advised him to relocate it to a single designated place, ensuring the move was done with respect.

Educating his workers on religious respect

The video also showed the contractor overseeing his workers as they carefully lifted the shrine onto a truck. At one point, a foreign worker asked why they couldn’t just throw it away.

The contractor immediately explained, “This is Malaysia. We must respect all religions. If people saw us carelessly discarding it, it would be embarrassing.”

Many netizens praised the contractor for his respect and cultural awareness.

“This I truly respect. You are considerate of other religions’ sensitivities. Respect… Well done.”
