Popular local comic artist and writer Cheeming Boey recently took to social media to share a shocking encounter of how a young boy was verbally berated by a relative during a book signing session.
In fact, he was so angered by the incident to the point where his body reacted towards it and had to take some time to cool down.
‘He’s a loser’
Sharing the incident on the subreddit r/Bolehland through a series of hand drawn pictures, Boey said he was at a book fair signing books when he asked the boy what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Before the boy could answer, a voice chimed in with a curt response: “A loser.”

The woman, who later identified herself as the boy’s aunt, continued with her tirade by saying, “Tell him you want to be a loser right? Tell him how lazy you are. Always so lazy!”
Appalled by what he had just heard, Boey advised the woman not to resort to using such words on the boy. However, she defended her actions, saying it was necessary to “motivate” him and even asked Boey to write something in order to spur him on.
When Boey replied by saying there were better ways to motivate the boy instead of calling him a “loser”, the woman claimed the boy often sat at home “doing nothing”.

In response, Boey told the woman that while that might be the case on the outside, the boy may be having lots of thoughts rattling inside his head.
Perhaps sensing that she was losing the argument, the woman told the boy to tell Boey what exactly goes on in his head. But the lad kept quiet and simply hung his head.

To make matters worse, the boy’s mother, who was present, did nothing to defend her son but simply asked for a photo of the boy with Boey.

Following the tense encounter, Boey said he was so enraged to see the boy getting humiliated by his own relative that his hands began to tremble and had to regain his composure.
F**k man. I’ve never, in all my 15 years of book signings, ever witnessed this. I wanted to call that f***ing piece of lard (the boy’s aunt) ‘fat’ and see how she felt. But I didn’t.
“I hope you guys are better parents than this. I hope you know what is said to a child will shape them for decades to come. I hope you know the impact behind those words.

“To you it may be a passing remark. Maybe even just “joking only lah”, but to a child hearing this, it will shape. I hope this is insight. I hope he turns out alright,” he wrote in the post’s caption.
Netizens were equally as outraged by the incident, with many slamming the woman for verbally abusing her nephew and expressed sympathy for the emotional pain he had to endure.
