M’sian Claims Friend Asked For Souvenirs During Overseas Trip, Acts Shocked When Asked To Pay For Them

“I thought it was a gift.”
Going on an overseas trip often comes with unexpected requests from people back home.

A Malaysian has shared his frustration after a friend allegedly assumed that items he helped buy during an overseas trip were meant to be free gifts.

According to a post shared on XUAN’s Facebook page, the OP said the situation started casually after he mentioned that he would be travelling to Bangkok.

Soon after, messages began pouring in.

One friend asked him to help buy a branded bag, claiming it was cheaper overseas. Another requested a lipstick, while someone else said they would send a list of snacks to buy later.

At the time, the traveller said he did not think much of it, believing that helping friends purchase a few items was reasonable.

However, by the time he returned, his luggage was packed to the brim, making it feel less like a holiday trip and more like moving house.

‘Huh? I have to pay for it?’

The situation escalated when he messaged the friend to inform them that the requested items had been successfully purchased.

Instead of arranging payment or collection, the friend allegedly replied by asking when he would be free to personally deliver the items.

The traveller said he was stunned by the response, as he had already paid for everything upfront and did not expect to act as a delivery service as well.

More than a week passed, and the friend still did not make any effort to collect the items. Feeling pressured due to the money he had advanced, he eventually delivered the items himself.

Even after receiving the items, the friend reportedly did not bring up payment.

Left with no choice, the traveller said he asked whether he could send the receipt so the money could be transferred back to him.

The friend then allegedly reacted with surprise and said they thought the items were meant to be a gift.

The incident left the traveller speechless, and he shared that they have not contacted each other since.
