Annual leave is a right that belongs to full-time employees as it allows them to take time off from work and recharge physically and mentally.
However, there are bosses who are iffy over the concept of allowing staff to take leave after they’ve planned it out or when opportunity comes knocking.
‘Who’s going to handle all the work?’
In an anonymous posting shared on XUAN’s Facebook page, the OP said they had been working at the company for 10 years but noticed that their boss would often get annoyed whenever staff apply for leave.

The OP got a taste of this side of their boss at the beginning of January after they submitted an application to take a week off from work.
“After seeing my application, my boss kept asking, “Why didn’t you discuss it with me beforehand?” He meant that I should’ve informed him before buying my flight tickets.
“I couldn’t hold back and replied that if there was a flight promotion, I needed to grab it quickly. However, he kept droning on and on about having no one to handle the work in my absence.”

Despite the OP telling their boss that they would make proper arrangements and hand everything over before going on leave, their boss still wasn’t satisfied with the answer and replied bluntly:
What if I don’t approve it your leave application?”
Knowing that there was no point arguing further, the OP told their boss not to approve their leave application.
Talked behind OP’s back
To add insult to injury, the OP claimed that their boss made several remarks such as, “If you don’t have money, don’t travel,” and “If you want to travel, don’t complain about expensive tickets” behind their back.

This left the OP feeling bewildered, who ended the post by asking netizens whether their bosses acted similarly and whether it’s common for staff to discuss with their boss first before buying flight tickets.
In the comment section, netizens offered words of advice to the OP over the situation.
‘If I were you, I’d still go on vacation even if my boss didn’t approve the application. The most he could do is to fire me, and I wouldn’t want to tolerate such a toxic boss anymore.’

‘Can’t believe such bosses exist! Take him to Labour Court and sue him!’

Meanwhile, one told the OP to look at the situation differently, saying that their boss probably couldn’t survive without them at the workplace.
The netizen also jokingly suggested that the OP ask for a 30% pay raise after their annual leave.
