It’s peak season at Perhentian Island, and boat operators are cashing in big time.
Earning up to RM5,000 a day

Thanks to the school holidays, boat operators at this idyllic island are raking in as much as RM5,000 daily.
According to Buletin TV3, the sharp spike in local holidaymakers has led to a surge in demand for boat services, especially among families seeking a quick island escape.
One operator revealed that bookings have doubled since the holidays began. Previously, only two boats ran each day now, five boats are actively ferrying tourists around just to keep up.
Day trips and custom packages in high demand

The services on offer go beyond just overnight stays. Operators also run daily trips, where visitors can enjoy snorkelling, island-hopping, and a host of other water activities without the need to stay the night.
Packages are priced anywhere between RM88 to RM1,000, depending on the type and length of the journey.
The island’s lush natural beauty, friendly local villages, and beachside chalets continue to make it a popular spot for domestic tourists looking for a peaceful getaway.
Saving for the rainy days ahead

While the income is lucrative, boat operators aren’t spending it all at once. With the monsoon season around the corner, many are already setting aside funds for maintenance and repairs.
Routine upkeep, which includes repairs, staff salaries, fuel, and other daily expenses, can easily climb up to RM30,000.
One seasoned operator shared, “Repair and maintenance costs for boats usually range from RM20,000 to RM30,000. That’s not even including daily operational costs.”
Tourists love it too
Visitors are also embracing the local island experience. One tourist mentioned that local destinations like Perhentian are becoming more appealing than international travel not just because it’s more budget-friendly, but also because it supports the local economy.
I came here with my family to enjoy the sea and nature, it’s been such a relaxing experience,” she said.
For these boat operators, the holiday season is a precious window of opportunity. As one of them put it, “Alhamdulillah, it’s truly rewarding. This is seasonal income when families come to the island and rent boats to unwind together.”
From the shores of Perhentian Island, it’s clear that when school’s out — business is definitely in.
