Even the smallest oversight can come with a hefty price when travelling abroad — as experienced by Malaysian actress Datin Seri Umie Aida.
Accidentally carried apple in hand luggage
Datin Seri Umie Aida recently revealed that she was fined RM1,000 (NZD400) at Auckland Airport, New Zealand, after unintentionally bringing an apple in her bag without declaring it to customs officers.

According to Kosmo!, the 51-year-old actress said that the mistake was due to fatigue, and that she had forgotten the apple was in her bag during the flight.
“This is what you call fate”
“I really didn’t bring any food to New Zealand because I wanted to make the immigration process easier for myself,” she shared.
But while I was at the MAS Airline lounge, I took an apple to eat on the plane before sleeping. I was too tired and ended up sleeping throughout the flight and forgot about the apple.”
Upon arrival, her bag was scanned and the apple was discovered, resulting in an on-the-spot fine from the Biosecurity Department.

Umie, whose full name is Umi Khalsum Rahmad Ali, was in New Zealand from 1 July for the filming of a drama series alongside fellow actors Nora Danish, Datuk Remy Ishak, and Fattah Amin.
New Zealand’s strict biosecurity rules
New Zealand enforces some of the world’s strictest biosecurity laws to protect its environment and agriculture. Fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, and meat products are not allowed to be brought into the country without proper declaration and inspection.
Even if the item is brought unintentionally, failure to declare it can result in an immediate fine of NZD400 (approximately RM1,000).
In more serious cases, legal action may also be taken. Travellers are strongly advised to declare any food items or goods they are unsure about to avoid penalties.
Reminder for travellers
While it was an unfortunate and costly mistake, Umie’s experience is a good reminder for all of us to be extra careful with what we carry when travelling especially when visiting countries with strict entry rules like New Zealand.
