As Malaysia gears up to celebrate its 68th National Day tomorrow (Aug 31), Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) decided to mark the occasion in a sweet way.
A cake for the neighbours
To commemorate the milestone, ICA commanders from Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints crossed the Causeway on Aug 30 with a thoughtful gift; a birthday cake accompanied by 68 cupcakes, each adorned with the number “68”.
The moment was captured in an official Facebook post, where officers from both sides – Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and Bangunan Sultan Iskandar CIQ were seen smiling and posing proudly with the cakes.
Celebrating strong ties
This light-hearted exchange carried a deeper meaning. In its post, ICA emphasised how the gesture was not just about cake, but also about friendship and trust:
ICA Commanders from Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints presented National Day cakes and 68 cupcakes to our counterparts … in celebration of Malaysia’s 68th Merdeka! We are thankful for the strong partnership as we work together to keep our borders secure.”
The agency added that such collaboration helps to ensure smooth trade and safe travels for the millions who cross the Causeway each year, before signing off with a cheerful birthday wish:
Happy 68th Birthday, Malaysia!”
This isn’t the first time sweet treats have been exchanged across the border.
In fact, the gesture comes shortly after Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency presented ICA with an adorable SG60 cake to mark Singapore’s 60th birthday.
