Do you think Malaysians are smart compared to other countries? Well, according to a study, we’re among the better ones — and in the 100 IQ threshold club!
Malaysia has recorded an average IQ score of 100, placing it in the top-range among Southeast Asian countries, according to the World Population Review 2024.
Singapore leading the list, as expected
While not leading the region, Malaysia’s score puts it on par with Vietnam, slightly behind Thailand (102), and a few points below regional leader Singapore, which boasts a score of 105 — the highest in Southeast Asia.

In contrast, several neighbouring countries continue to lag behind. Indonesia recorded an average IQ of 93.2, Bangladesh 96.5, and the Philippines 96.7 — all below the global average.
These figures reflect ongoing gaps in education systems, access to learning resources, and other socioeconomic factors that influence cognitive development.
Global IQ ranking
Globally, the latest data shows a clear shift in intellectual dominance towards Asia. China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau now share the top spot with an average IQ of 107, followed closely by South Korea and Japan at 106.
In terms of global rankings, Malaysia sits at 25th place, while Singapore stands firmly in 8th place, maintaining its reputation as an educational and intellectual powerhouse.
Interestingly, Iran also joins the top ranks with a score of 106, matching East Asia’s intellectual heavyweights and challenging common perceptions that associate intelligence leadership primarily with the West.
Although the methodology and fairness of IQ measurement remain subjects of debate, the data suggests that Asia — particularly East and parts of Southeast Asia — is steadily rising as a global centre of intellectual capability.
