M’sia May Standardise School Uniforms Nationwide To Reduce Colour Differences By 2027

Too many colours
The Ministry of Education (MOE) is reportedly considering a move to standardise school uniforms nationwide, a step aimed at reducing colour variations between schools and easing the financial burden on parents.

The proposal, which is still under review, is expected to see a final decision announced by August 2026, with phased implementation beginning in 2027 for Year One and Form One students.

Pushing for unity through uniforms

According to Malay Mail, MOE Director General of Education Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the idea stemmed from concerns that overly colourful uniforms may undermine efforts to instil unity among students.

He was quoted as saying that uniforms with too many colours could encourage differences and competition from a young age, rather than fostering a shared sense of belonging.

A comprehensive review on the matter has been ongoing since September and involves multiple stakeholders, with all related aspects currently being studied.

Mohd Azam pointed out that some schools currently require uniforms featuring more than seven colours, along with different T shirts for various activities and extra items such as blazers and vests.

He said these differing requirements can complicate matters for students who transfer schools mid year and also place additional financial pressure on families.

In his view, cosmetic elements that do not directly affect students’ education should be avoided, especially when they result in higher costs that parents should not have to bear.

Easing the burden on families

The ministry, he added, is mindful of the financial strain parents face each time a new school term begins, particularly households with more than one school going child.

Uniform related decisions, including the non compulsory wearing of ties, should be implemented gradually and through consensus between schools and parent teacher associations.

He also stressed that student comfort must be taken into account, especially given Malaysia’s hot climate, as any changes to school attire are rolled out.
