How many transgender individuals live in your country? Most people wouldn’t know or may not have ever thought to ask.
But a recent global study just revealed the top 10 Asian countries with the largest transgender populations, and the results are turning heads.
The Philippines takes the lead
According to data published by a global population tracking platform, the Philippines tops the list with an estimated 239,000 transgender individuals, making it the country with the largest transgender population in Asia.
Interestingly, this figure surpasses Thailand, which has long been associated with strong transgender visibility and culture. Thailand came in second with 62,000 individuals.
Malaysia ranks in the top 5
In a surprise to some, Malaysia ranks fifth, with around 24,000 people estimated to be transgender.
While the topic may still be considered taboo in parts of the country, the number points to a growing visibility or at the very least, increased recognition of gender-diverse identities.
