The Rise of Gaming Laptops and Overcoming Challenges
Founded in 1986, MSI’s journey has been a testament to resilience and adaptability. Starting with motherboards and graphics cards, their technical prowess earned them industry recognition.
The diverse potential of the computer industry led to their expansion into notebooks and systems. In 2004, they launched their first laptop, the M510C, marking the beginning of their journey in laptop development.
However, the path was not always smooth. In 2009, MSI boldly anticipated that portable, lightweight laptops would dominate the market. This led to the successful development of the X340, the thinnest laptop on the market at the time.
Yet, the rapid rise of smartphones and tablets dramatically changed consumer habits, presenting MSI with a tough challenge. But MSI’s resilience and determination led to a strategic shift that would redefine the company’s future.
Yet, challenges often bring new opportunities. These difficulties prompted MSI to rethink what consumers truly wanted. Eric recalled that around this time, the game World of Warcraft was hugely popular.
During a visit to an overseas LAN party, they noticed gamers lugging heavy PCs to the event. What these gamers really needed was a high-performance computer in a more compact form.
Recognizing the potential of the gaming market, MSI decided to move away from price wars and focus on developing high-value gaming laptops for users.
By prioritizing gamers’ needs and creating products accordingly, MSI began releasing one gaming laptop after another that perfectly met gamers’ demands.
This strategy successfully established MSI’s laptop empire, and by 2015, their gaming laptops had achieved the highest market share worldwide.
Expanding Product Lines and Embracing Innovation
Henry Chung, Country Manager at MSI Malaysia, also shared his insights. Entering the gaming market from an unfamiliar territory was a significant challenge for the company’s internal transformation.
They had to convince employees that “gaming is the future.” To achieve this, they held numerous lectures and training sessions to help everyone understand the gaming atmosphere and the trends on social media.
This was a stark contrast to the traditional approach to computer research and development. Through these efforts, employees even began live-streaming and interacting with other players online.
This learning process helped employees internalize their work, which in turn positively influenced clients and consumers, embedding the MSI brand deeply in everyone’s minds.
When it comes to designing and creating a product, Henry was clear that extensive research into consumer needs and market feasibility is crucial before launching a product.
This period can vary, but once a direction is confirmed, MSI takes pride in handling everything from product conception, and software and hardware design, to manufacturing in their own factories.
This integrated approach allows them to swiftly adjust product features based on feedback, always prioritizing the consumer’s perspective, which has undeniably been a key factor in their success.
A Collaboration Born from Shared Values: MSI and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport
If there’s one recent laptop that stands out, Henry highlighted the collaboration with Mercedes-AMG. Discussions about the partnership began before the pandemic, as both sides shared similar values and wanted to create something special together.
Despite various delays, they resumed discussions in 2022, and AMG never considered another partner.
Due to MSI’s pursuit of innovative technology and extreme performance, they successfully created the Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport A13V, blending both brands’ visions of excellence.
This laptop received consumer acclaim and various awards, reinforcing the belief that staying true to one’s roots is never wrong.
In response to the growing demand for portability among gamers, MSI recently launched the Claw gaming handheld PC.
Henry believes that modern technology allows high-performance equipment to be integrated into a small form factor, enabling MSI to fully utilize its past advantages and successfully capture gamers’ attention.

For four years in a row, MSI has earned the title of the best laptop brand in the “Reader’s Choice” poll conducted by the renowned tech media PCMAG.
