Lee Zii Jia made all Malaysians proud by seizing the All England crown yesterday with a stirring and nail-biting 30-29, 20-22, 21-9 win over Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles final at the Birmingham Arena.
Former World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, also a four-time All England champion, congratulated Zii Jia for winning his maiden All-England title in a Facebook post.
With Malaysians buzzing with excitement over the good news, the legendary shuttler showered praise on the newly-crowned All England champion.
“Tahniah Lee Zii Jia ! The new All England Champ! Awesome performance and looks like you have found your pace! Keep up the good work!”
He also attached a photo of them in the Facebook post.
However, what caught the attention of netizens was the hashtag #laginervoustengokboladrpmainrupanya, which hinted Lee was much more nervous about watching the match than being on the court himself.
Many Malaysians who stayed up well into the night concurred with Lee, with one quipping, “Now you know how we felt when we watched you play.”
