A young German man’s romantic anniversary surprise turned into an unexpected loss after USD2,000 (Approx. RM8000) flew away with a balloon.
The incident was shared on Instagram and has since gained nearly 150 million views.
Surprise plan in open parking lot
The video was uploaded on Feb 11 to the man’s Instagram account.
The clip appears to be filmed at night in an open parking area.
In the video, the couple stood beside a table holding a large white gift box tied with a red ribbon.

The man wore a black suit while the woman was dressed in black and holding a bouquet of red balloons.
Text on the video read, “How I prepared an anniversary surprise for my girlfriend.”
Cash tied to balloon
Inside the box was a balloon attached to a long chain of cash totalling USD2,000 (Approx. RM8000).
The notes were carefully linked together to form a long strip.

When the woman opened the box, pink light glowed from inside as the balloon slowly rose into the air.
She appeared surprised and excited, and turned to hug her boyfriend.
Balloon slips away during hug
During their embrace, the balloon slipped loose from the box.
The entire chain of cash floated into the night sky.

The woman tried to chase after it while the man threw his jacket in an attempt to stop the balloon, but they failed.
Another caption read, “The cash chain suddenly detached from the box.”
“That was my salary,” man says
The man appeared shocked and fell to the ground, covering his face.
His girlfriend knelt beside him to comfort him, saying, “It’s the thought that counts.”
He replied, “Darling, that was my salary.”
She responded, “Then earn more money.”
