A man in Spain has been awarded RM101,000 in compensation after a surgery left him with long term complications, including a significant reduction in penis length.

The ruling was made by the High Court of Justice in the Murcia region, which ordered the regional public healthcare provider to compensate the patient following a prolonged legal dispute.
Sought treatment for painful condition
According to court documents, the man sought medical help at Hospital Rosell in Cartagena in October 2011 after experiencing a painful erection and a noticeable curvature of his penis.
Reported by mStar, the doctors later diagnosed him with Peyronie’s disease, a condition that causes abnormal curvature due to scar tissue.
He initially received medical treatment, but when his condition did not improve, surgery was recommended as the next step.
Surgery led to further complications

Following the operation, the man reportedly developed erectile dysfunction. More notably, his penis length was reduced by up to six centimetres, a permanent change that significantly affected his quality of life.
The patient later filed a claim against the regional health authorities, arguing that he had not been fully informed about the potential risks associated with the procedure.
Court rules consent was inadequate
While the man had signed a consent form prior to surgery, the court ruled that the document was insufficient.
Judges found that it failed to clearly explain alternative treatment options and did not adequately outline the possible complications that could arise from the operation.
Because of this, the court concluded that the patient was unable to make a fully informed decision before undergoing surgery.
Appeal overturned earlier rejection

The man’s initial claim for compensation had previously been rejected by regional health authorities.
However, the court upheld his appeal and ruled in his favour, ordering the public healthcare body to pay him €20,000, equivalent to about RM101,000.
