Due to feeling uneasy about the surgical procedure after swallowing a chopstick, a man in China decided to leave the object inside his throat for a total of eight years.
However, it eventually became too much to bear and he eventually had the chopstick removed from his throat.
Lived with chopstick inside throat
According to local media reports, the man, surnamed Wang, had swallowed a 12cm-long metal chopstick by accident while eating.

Following that, he felt like choking and experienced intermittent pain in his throat, but he had no trouble breathing.
Wang then went to a hospital, where he underwent a simple treatment to temporarily seek respite from the discomfort.
When doctors told him that a surgery was needed to remove the chopstick, Wang chose to sit it out as he was afraid it might go awry and let the object remain lodged in his throat.
Warning signs
For the next eight years, Wang went on with his daily routine but would still feel discomfort from the chopstick from time to time.
He often blamed the discomfort on alcohol, which he drank often, and didn’t pay much heed to it.

However, Wang sensed something was terribly wrong when he woke up one morning and suffered intense pain in his throat, which hurt even more when he tried to swallow.
Upon rushing to the hospital, doctors found that the chopstick was embedded in the back of his throat, with about 3cm of it protruding at the top.
Thankfully, it didn’t cause any bleeding or ulcers to form in his throat.

A minimally invasive operation was then carried out to extract the chopstick from Wang’s mouth without having to cut his neck, finally freeing him from the object.
