A family in Xiamen, China, is demanding answers after one of their members drowned while taking a swim inside a pool despite lifeguards being present nearby.
According to China’s Jimu News on NetEase, it reported that the 35-year-old victim was a national-level badminton athlete and a swimming enthusiast.
Struggled in pool while lifeguards watched
The news outlet reported that the victim was swimming in the far-right lane of the indoor pool on Nov 17, where its water level had reached a depth that rendered him unable to stay afloat.
Surveillance footage showed that there were two lifeguards standing by the pool and saw the victim struggling but didn’t rescue him.

One of them was seen standing near where the victim sank and even glanced at the water occasionally but did nothing.
The other lifeguard walked by five minutes later and simply walked away when he saw the victim fighting to stay afloat.
Too little too late
A third lifeguard eventually spotted the victim and quickly sprung into action to save the victim.
However, it proved to be too late as the victim had died after struggling for 30 minutes.

Following the incident, the victim’s grieved family demanded for answers from the lifeguards for failing to act in time.
However, none of them were willing to give a comment on the matter and the pool management also declined to give an explanation for the incident.
