An engineer from China’s Jaingsu province was kicked out from his place of employment due to him taking multiple toilet breaks that lasted for hours.
Following his termination, the man named Li filed a lawsuit against the company for illegal termination of his contract, reported South China Morning Post (SCMP).
Took toilet breaks that lasted for hours
According to the case, Li was found to have taken a total of 14 bathroom breaks between April and May 2024, with the longest session lasting for four hours.

Surveillance footage documenting Li’s visits to the bathroom were submitted to court by his company, who believed it “greatly exceeded” his physical needs.
The company also revealed that Li was required to always respond to work requests promptly but failed to do so.
For his part, Li submitted records of haemorrhoid medicine his partner bought in May and June 2024 and inpatient surgery records from January 2025.
However, the company argued that Li’s medical records only covered a certain time period after he took many bathroom breaks.

According to Li’s contract, he’s deemed to be absent if he leaves his post for a certain period of time without permission.
In addition, the contract also stated that being absent for a total of three working days in 180 days will result in immediate termination.
Case closed
The matter was finally brought to an end when the court mediated a settlement between Li and the company following two trials.
Li was eventually paid 30,000 yuan (approx. RM17,400), which took into account his past contributions to the company and the difficulty he faced in securing another job.
