If you’ve ever been to Singapore, you’d probably would know that it’s an actual offense to drink or eat while onboard its MRT.
However, there are still some who simply don’t get it or want to try their luck in testing the limits of the rules, just like how this young man did.
Films himself drinking water on MRT
In a clip that was shared on Instagram, it showed the young man, who’s believed to be from China, standing in front of the Chinese Garden MRT station gantry while holding a large bottle of mineral water.
After telling viewers that drinking is prohibited on all MRTs in Singapore, he stated that he would embark on a “challenge” by drinking water on the MRT.

After boarding the MRT, he then pointed to a “No Drinking” sign which warned commuters that those caught breaking the law will be fined S$500 (approx. RM1,600).

After looking around to ensure that the coast was clear, the young man proceeded to take a mouthful of water before posing for the camera with a thumbs-up.
Upon alighting the MRT at Outram Park, he confidently told viewers that he had proven it was okay for one to drink water on the MRT anytime.
Police report lodged
Unfortunately for him, not everyone found his “challenge” to be a laughing matter, with one of them being SMRT.
SMRT Trains President Lam Sheau Kai told Mothership and MS News in a statement that it was made aware of the clip showing the young man drinking water on the East-West line.
He added a police report was also lodged over the matter.

Lam called the young man’s behaviour “irresponsible”, saying that SMRT takes such incidents seriously and urged members of the public to notify its staff if they witness such actions.
