Man In S’pore Dives Head First Into E-Waste Bin, Walks Away With Phone & Tablet

Looking for treasure among trash.
A man startled a resident who was just minding her own business at the Nee Soon Central Community Club in Singapore last month.

The reason? He somehow felt the need to slide half of his body right into an e-waste recycling bin and allegedly retrieved two items from it, which is illegal.

Dumpster-diving?

The resident told Mothership that the incident took place on Jan 10, where she stumbled upon the sight of the man’s legs dangling out of the bin.

After the man rummaging through the bin for around five to 10 minutes, the resident said she witnessed him taking a phone and tablet and putting them into a bag before leaving the scene.

She later lodged a report regarding the incident, where it was later forwarded to the company behind the e-recycling bin, which was appointed a Producer Responsibility Scheme (PRS) Operator by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

‘Unacceptable’

When contacted by Mothership, a customer service officer said that the company viewed such incidents very “seriously”, adding that what the man did were “unacceptable and cannot be tolerated”.

A team is currently looking further into the matter as well.

Under Singapore’s Environmental Public Health Act, all waste brought to a public disposal facility or collected by NEA employees, contractors, or agents is deemed to belong to the NEA.

And it seems this isn’t the first time people have tried to retrieve items from e-recycling bins, with the previous incident taking place last November.
