Malaysia’s journey in the 2024 Thomas Cup came to a close with a 1:3 defeat against China in the semi-finals.
This was a significant event as it marked Malaysia’s first return to the semi-finals since 2016, with their last championship win in 1992.
Hard fought battles
During the matches, Malaysia showed commendable fight. Lee Zii Jia faced Shi Yu Qi but was unable to clinch the win, losing with scores of 19-21 and 5-21.
In the doubles, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik put up a strong resistance but eventually fell to Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in a hard-fought match that went to three games, finishing 15-21, 21-12, 21-17.
Leong Jun Hao competed against Li Shi Feng but was defeated 17-21 and 10-21. The team of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin also faced a tough battle and lost to He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu, with scores of 21-18, 19-21, 12-21.
Despite these defeats, the Malaysian team demonstrated great skill and determination, holding promise for future tournaments.
