MALAYSIA – The daily coronavirus infections has hit an all-time high of 2,593 active cases on Wednesday (Jan 6). In regards to the following situation, health director-general Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press conference that the country’s health system is at a “breaking point”, in which the number of active cases filled hospital beds to nearly full capacity.
“Our worry is the daily rise in cases. The CMCO (Conditional Movement Control Order) implemented on Oct 14 prevented cases from hitting 4,000. We managed to avoid that, but with the 1.1 R0 (reproductive rate), we still couldn’t bring the cases down”, Noor Hisham said.
On the other hand, we can still see domestic tourism is at a peak with Malaysians travelling nationwide. They behave like they are immune from the pandemic.
Today (Jan 7), a COVID-19 patient took to social media and shared her uncomfortable experience getting the virus. Based on the recent photos listed by the Facebook user, it looks like the quarantine centre is filled with patients and overworked front-liners who are taking care of them restlessly.
She also expressed her disappointment in the Facebook post as the equipment and facilities in the quarantine centre are not up to par despite the government’s effort in coping with the situation for more than 10 months.
As it can be seen from the photos her shared, the patients are being quarantined in a badminton court operating at almost-full capacity. Also, the front-liners are sweating as they are equipped with thick Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Moving forward, she also mentioned that the quarantine centre is lack of electronic sockets, as most of the patients could not charge their electronic devices. Besides, the beds are combined by different plastics baskets underneath, which are claimed to be sponsored by Tzu Chi, a charity organization.
What disappoints her the most is the toilet facilities. She said that the toilet is where they shower and wash their clothes, but the water is stagnant and the environment is moist and dirty at all times.
In the end, she urges all the Malaysians to take good care of themselves and be a responsible citizen by staying at home. If your family member or your colleague happens to be infected, please don’t hesitate to contact the relevant department and do all the necessary procedures to block the virus chain.
