Malaysian Schools Get Dedicated Police Liaison Officers To Tackle Bullying, Juvenile Crime & Drug Issues

"Preventing issues at early stage is crucial."
Malaysian schools are being assigned dedicated police liaison officers as part of a strengthened effort to keep students safe from bullying, juvenile crime, drug abuse, and negative social media influences.

While the programme has been in place since 2018, authorities recently announced a renewed focus under what is being described as a Smart Enforcement approach.

The aim is not to punish, but to prevent problems before they escalate.

Prevent issues in school

According to a Facebook statement, under this initiative, officers are placed in schools to work closely with teachers, students, and parents.

They serve as trusted points of contact for students, listeners for concerns, and support figures for families.

Their role includes addressing issues such as bullying, juvenile delinquency, drug-related risks, and harmful online influences that could impact students’ wellbeing and future.

Officials say the presence of liaison officers also helps ensure that schools remain safe, conducive learning environments where students feel protected and supported.

Preventing issues at early stage is important

The Smart Enforcement approach emphasises guidance, early intervention, and community engagement rather than strict enforcement alone.

Authorities believe that preventing issues at an early stage is one of the most valuable investments in safeguarding young people.

Known as the School Liaison Officer programme, or Pegawai Perhubungan Sekolah (PPS), the initiative is a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN), the Ministry of Education (MOE), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Through continued collaboration between KDN, MOE, and PDRM, the government aims to strengthen school safety today while building a more resilient generation for Malaysia’s future.
