Malaysia Ranks Top 3 In Asia For English Proficiency In 2025, Rising To 24th Globally

More Malaysians are using English confidently at work and online now.
Malaysia has earned a proud moment on the global stage after the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2025 placed the country at Rank 24 worldwide and more importantly, among the Top 3 in Asia for English proficiency.

This marks one of Malaysia’s strongest performances in recent years, reflecting significant improvements in English ability among adults across reading, listening, writing and speaking.

In the 2024 EF EPI, Malaysia already held a high proficiency level at Rank 26 globally with a score of 566.

But in 2025, Malaysia made an impressive leap:

  • Rank 24 globally
  • Score increased to 581
  • Top 3 in Asia
  • +15 points improvement year-over-year

With the 2025 index now including productive skills such as speaking and writing, Malaysia’s improvement shows that Malaysians are becoming more confident and capable in real-world communication, not just reading and listening.

Malaysia’s capital city continued its upward momentum with a score of 588, reflecting steady improvement in English proficiency among urban communities, workplaces, and education hubs.

This suggests that more Malaysians are actively using English in daily life, whether in digital communication, content creation, business, or education.
