M’sia Could Soon Cap Prime Minister’s Tenure At 10 Years Or 2 Terms, Says Anwar

New changes coming soon?
Malaysia may soon introduce a term limit for its Prime Minister, with a new law expected to be tabled in Parliament this year.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the proposed Bill would cap the Prime Minister’s tenure at no more than 10 years, or two full terms, in a move aimed at ensuring clearer leadership transitions.

Speaking during his 2026 New Year address at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly in Putrajaya, Anwar said defined term limits would help leaders carry out their responsibilities more effectively within a fixed period.

When a term is given, one is able to carry out their responsibilities within that period.”

Anwar added that leadership should eventually be passed on to the next generation once that period ends, describing the move as a step towards healthier governance.

According to Anwar, the proposed term limit would also apply to the Prime Minister’s Department, reinforcing the government’s commitment to leadership renewal and institutional reform.

If passed, the law would mark a significant change in Malaysia’s political framework by formally limiting how long a Prime Minister can remain in office.
