We usually see chairs being made from sturdy materials such as wood or teak, but would you consider buying one made from balloons?
South Korean artist Yang Seungjin recently awed the world with his chair collection made with, yes, balloons!
Yang first attempted to transform these chairs into real furniture with his Blowing Series in 2013.
What I’m doing now may be more difficult than assembling toys, but I think a lot of it is the same thing I did as a kid,” he said to SSense.

Trial and error
Yang’s Blowing Series stemmed from his intention to transform undefined forms of balloons into sculptures based on his own interpretations.
However, it wasn’t smooth sailing for him as he had to test multiple methods to stabilise the balloon chairs.
After a long trial period, Yang began coating the balloons with eight layers of epoxy, not knowing that he had found the answer.

It was pretty spontaneous. I applied epoxy to a balloon one day and thought it looked pretty.”
“Additionally, coating the balloons with epoxy also gives it a glossy look too,” he said.
Luxurious furniture
Today, what started as a random experiment has now turned into a lucrative business for Yang.

His creations have also made its way to homes around the world and into the pages of Architectural Digest too.
