Long-Awaited KLIA Aerotrain To Finally Resume Operations in February 2025

The long-awaited Aerotrain service at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 is expected to resume operations by early February 2025, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

According to China Press, this move is part of Malaysia’s preparation as the ASEAN Chair for the year, which will see numerous foreign leaders and dignitaries arriving through KLIA.

Loke highlighted the importance of enhancing the airport’s facilities to welcome international visitors.

As part of this initiative, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has been instructed to upgrade all airport entry points, with key improvements, including renovated VIP lounges, scheduled for completion by 31 December.

Project Background and Timeline

The Aerotrain replacement project faced delays after the suspension of the old system in March 2023 due to mechanical issues.

In the interim, shuttle buses were deployed to connect passengers between terminals.

Alstom Transport Systems and IJMC-Pestech JV are overseeing the delivery of new trains, expected to arrive from China in late 2024, followed by comprehensive testing to ensure operational safety before the February relaunch.

Improved Passenger Protection and Airline Regulations

In addition to airport upgrades, Loke stressed the importance of protecting passenger rights.

Under the revised Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC), which took effect in September 2023, passengers are entitled to a full refund if flights are delayed by more than five hours. He urged passengers to report any violations to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).
