KL Ranked One Of World’s Most Affordable Cities With RM2.3K Rent & RM13 Coffee

The study reports that if you’re single, your monthly expenses (excluding rent) would be approximately RM2,690.
Finding a city that offers both affordability and a great quality of life isn’t always easy, but Kuala Lumpur (KL) makes it possible.

With a population of nearly 9.4 million, Malaysia’s capital is drawing more expatriates and digital nomads who want modern conveniences without sky-high costs.

A study by HR and financial consulting firm Mercer ranks KL among the best cities for balancing low living costs with a comfortable lifestyle, making it an attractive option for those looking to live well without spending a fortune.

One of the biggest perks of living in KL is that your paycheck stretches further. Compared to other major cities like Singapore, New York, or London, KL offers modern conveniences at a fraction of the cost.

Here’s a look at what daily life expenses are like in KL, according to Numbeo, a platform that tracks cost-of-living data:

  • Rent: A one-bedroom apartment in the city centre costs around RM2,340 per month
  • Living costs: If you’re single, your monthly expenses (excluding rent) would be about RM2,690, while a family of four can live on around RM9,540.
  • Food & Dining: A three-course meal for two in a nice restaurant costs RM127, and you can get your daily caffeine fix with a RM13.50 cappuccino.
  • Gym membership: Staying fit doesn’t have to be expensive either—memberships average RM204 per month.

These numbers prove that KL isn’t just an exciting place to live—it’s also one of the few cities where you can enjoy modern comforts without breaking the bank.

If you love food, welcome to paradise. KL’s diverse cultural mix means you can find all kinds of flavours, whether it’s a roti canai from a mamak stall, steaming hot dim sum, or a gourmet wagyu steak.

“A city after my own heart, the best activity in KL has to be eating! Malaysians love their food, and so do expats! Thanks to the diversity of the city, you’ll find Malaysian, Indian and Chinese food all over, as well as western options and everything in between,”says Lynne Lessar, an expatriate blogger.

Beyond the food, KL’s vibrant celebrations like Deepavali and Chinese New Year add to the city’s charm, with colourful lights, lively street performances, and plenty of festive treats to enjoy.

The trade-offs of living in KL

Of course, no city is perfect, and KL does have a few quirks that take some getting used to.

For one, Malaysia’s entertainment scene isn’t as big as some of its neighbours, meaning you might not get as many major concerts or international theatre performances.

Another thing to consider is alcohol prices. Compared to places like Bangkok, drinking in KL can be pricey, so if nightlife is a big part of your routine, you might need to budget a little extra.

“The entertainment industry isn’t exactly supported in Malaysia and alcohol is relatively expensive for the region,” Lessar points out.

Additionally, customer service in KL can sometimes feel a little slow. Things move at a more relaxed pace here, so whether you’re dealing with government offices or waiting for your food order, a bit of patience goes a long way.

“Still, there are pockets of great nightlife and plenty of great things to do. Just bear in mind that Malaysia is not known for customer service, so keep your spirit light and patience high while you’re out, as service takes time here.”

So, is KL right for you?

If you’re looking for a city that’s affordable, exciting, and full of cultural experiences, KL might just be the perfect place.

While there are a few minor challenges, they’re far outweighed by the benefits—great food, reasonable living costs, and a lively mix of cultures.
