Whether you’re a local or tourist, the last thing you’d want is to become a victim of crime during open daylight or in the dark of night.
While Malaysia has enjoyed a relatively good level of safety, a recent study by Forbes Advisor found that the capital city of Kuala Lumpur may not be as safe as most would assume it to be.
KL 5th most dangerous city in Southeast Asia
According to the study, Forbes Advisor ranked a total 60 cities in terms of its level of safety for American citizens to visit.
The ranking is based on seven metrics. However, only the following five are named in the study:
- Crime risk – The overall level of crime in each city
- Personal security risk – The risk from crime, violence, terrorist threats, natural disasters and economic vulnerabilities
- Health security risk – The level and quality of healthcare services and infrastructure in a city
- Infrastructure security risk – The availability and quality of city infrastructure and its vulnerability to man-made and natural disasters
- Digital security risk – Citizens’ ability to freely use the internet without fear of privacy violations, identity theft and online attacks
Based on these metrics, KL scored 55.36 out of 100, placing it at 29th place globally.
Here’s how Malaysia fared in each of the metrics:
- Crime risk: 15th place
- Personal security risk: 28th place
- Health security risk: 23rd place
- Infrastructure security risk: 24th place
- Digital security risk: 17th place
As for the Southeast Asian context, KL was found to be the 5th most dangerous city for tourists to visit alongside these countries:
- Yangon, Myanmar (3rd globally)
- Manila, Phillippines (5th globally)
- Jakarta, Indonesia (11th globally)
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (20th globally)
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (29th globally)
- Bangkok, Thailand (30th globally)
As for the safest countries in the world, there were Singapore (1st), Tokyo (2nd), and Toronto (3rd).
