From bizarre food challenges to extreme endurance tests, the internet loves an unusual competition.
But while we’re used to seeing these contests pop up in other countries, Malaysia is now stepping into the spotlight with something unexpected—a crying competition in Kelantan.
Kelantan’s crying contest is the first of its kind in Malaysia
Held as part of The Expo Kelantan Event, the competition quickly gained attention on social media.
It’s the first time Malaysia has seen an event like this, resembling similar contests in Indonesia where participants compete to shed the most convincing tears.

While it might seem like an odd concept, the event certainly got people curious.

Tears, drama, and RM500 on the line
Videos from the competition show both men and women dramatically trying to outcry each other, with some pulling exaggerated expressions while others genuinely teared up.
The goal? To impress the judges and take home the RM500 cash prize.
Spectators gathered around, some cheering, some laughing, and many recording the moment on their phones.
While it might have looked like a scene straight out of a reality show, the competition was very real.
Entertaining or embarrassing?
As expected, the contest sparked a mix of reactions online. Some people found it hilarious and lighthearted, saying they wouldn’t have the guts to put themselves out there like that.
Others, however, thought it was downright embarrassing—questioning if RM500 was really worth putting on such a public display of emotions.
