A video showing a car driving against traffic on a one-way road in Penang has sparked widespread discussion online, with many netizens brushing it off as a familiar sight in the state.
According to a video uploaded by the Facebook page Penang Kini, the incident is believed to have taken place along a road in the Sungai Dua area.
Allegedly missed a turn
In the clip, a Perodua Ativa is seen calmly driving against the flow of traffic on a one-way lane, while other vehicles appear to slow down and give way.
The post described the situation as the car “nonchalantly going against the current while other cars calmly make space.”

Based on the footage, the vehicle is believed to have missed a junction earlier. Instead of continuing forward and making a proper turn, the driver reportedly crossed from the leftmost lane of a two-way road into the rightmost one-way lane that is meant for vehicles exiting the junction.
The car then proceeded to slowly reverse course by driving against traffic to return to the missed turn. At one point, it appeared to hit the curb, further fuelling criticism over the driver’s decision.

‘This Is just Penang’
Several netizens questioned why the driver did not simply remain on the original two-way road and make a safer detour, rather than entering a one-way exit lane and driving against oncoming vehicles.
Shortly after the video was uploaded, it drew a flood of comments, with many netizens remarking that such behaviour was nothing out of the ordinary.
Comments such as “This is just Penang” and “A normal day in Penang” were repeatedly echoed, suggesting that some road users see such incidents as commonplace rather than shocking.
However, not all criticism was directed at the Ativa driver. Some commenters pointed out that the person recording the video appeared to also be travelling against traffic, allegedly riding a motorcycle in the opposite direction to follow and capture the incident.
