‘You Sure?’ — Johorian Says Penang Drivers Are ‘Polite’ But Netizens Aren’t Convinced

Press X to doubt.
If you’re a Malaysian, you would have heard (or experienced) how fast and inpatient Penang drivers often are on the road, which has since evolved into an infamous legacy for them.

However, a netizen shared how he experienced the total opposite during a recent trip to the state and it has left many doubting his story.

Traffic experience in Penang

In a Xiaohongshu post, the OP, who hails from Johor, said he drove to Penang for a five-day holiday and recounted several things he found interesting or strange about driving in the state.

First, he noted that traffic lights tend to last for around three to five minutes, which, in his opinion, were long enough to play several songs in the car while waiting for the light to turn green.

Second, he said that roads in Penang were extremely narrow and often changed from three lanes to two lanes, making it confusing for non-Penangites. He also said that finding parking was largely based on “luck”.

As for the third point, the OP wrote that generally Penang drivers were “polite” and often followed traffic rules, making his driving experience quite “slow and relaxing”.

“This is the part I like the most: when someone signals to merge, other drivers don’t step on the accelerator to block you out and you rarely hear people honking,” he added.

‘Is this really Penang?’

In the comment section, netizens weren’t exactly buying the OP’s story and wondered whether he had mistaken another state for Penang.

‘This doesn’t sound like the Penang I live in.’

‘The Penang you speak of…is it the same Penang I know?’

Meanwhile, one joked that the drivers became “polite” for the OP after seeing that his car number plate came from Johor as Johorians are said to be way more reckless on the road.

To all Penang drivers, what do you think of the OP’s observations?
