A jobless father of two was sentenced to one month in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of shoplifting from a supermarket in Kuala Terengganu.
The accused, Muhamad Azrul Haqim Azman, made the plea after the charge was read out before Magistrate Iffah Nabihah Mohd Ishak at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Jan 5), reported Sinar Harian.
Stole soap, shampoo, & singlet
According to the charge, Azrul committed the crime at about 9.30pm inside the supermarket on New Year’s Day (Jan 1).
He stole a bottle of Carrie Junior Hair and Body Wash, two units of Selsun 2-in-1 shampoo, a Lifebuoy body wash and a Byford singlet — all of which were valued at RM113.70.

Azrul was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which provides a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in jail and a fine. For repeat offenders, they face whipping as well.
‘He did it for the family’
In court, Azrul’s lawyer asked the court to show mercy, saying his client, who’s married and has two young children aged four and three months, had lost his job and had no fixed source of income.
He also informed the court that the items stolen by Azrul were not for reselling purposes but simply to meet the daily needs of his family and himself.

The court was also told that Azrul suffers from high blood pressure and that this was his first run-in with the law.
Azrul was eventually ordered to sit in jail for a month, where his sentence will take effect from the date of his arrest on Jan 2.
