A zoo in Japan has introduced a ban on single men entering its premises, citing concerns over the safety and comfort of female visitors.

Located in Tochigi Prefecture, eastern Japan, Healing Pavilion Zoo is an interactive space where visitors can feed and cuddle animals like cats, dogs, and sheep.

The zoo, which opened in March last year, aims to provide therapeutic connections between animals and humans.

According to Sinar Harian, on Jan 26, the zoo’s director, Misa Mama, announced a new rule that stunned many.

In the social media post, they shared that the ban is effective immediately, and male visitors are prohibited from entering the zoo alone.

The announcement was accompanied by a notice at the zoo’s entrance stating that single men must be accompanied by friends or family to gain entry.

Troubling incidents prompt ban

Explaining the decision, Mama revealed that while most visitors to the zoo have been families or couples, there have been troubling incidents involving single male visitors.

Some men have approached and tried to flirt with female visitors,” they said, adding that certain individuals had displayed inappropriate behaviour, including making lewd comments.

Mama emphasised that Healing Pavilion was established as a place for emotional healing, not matchmaking.

“This rule is not based on arrogance or a misunderstanding of men,” she clarified, stressing the need to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all visitors.

Despite the backlash, Healing Pavilion Zoo stands firm on its decision, prioritising the emotional well-being of its visitors and staying true to its mission of creating a therapeutic sanctuary for both humans and animals.
