Malaysia’s widely known for its mouthwatering cuisines and every once in a while, we would add a dash of sambal or cili padi into our food to spice things up a bit.
A ramen eatery in Japan recently sparked a debate on social media after a photo of its ranking spice tolerance level by countries went viral, with it placing Malaysia in the middle of the pack.
Japanese ramen eatery ranks M’sia’s spice tolerance as ‘mid’
In a photo shared in the subreddit r/interestingasf**k two days ago, it showed a list of countries being ranked based on its spice tolerance level.
The menu also stated that it was only applicable for the restaurant’s spicy ramen and each level has its own pricing too.
According to the photo, Japan was ranked at the lowest level, while Indonesia was placed at the top spot along with a picture of a skull and crossbones, presumably to warn customers that their stomachs might be in for a wild (and possibly painful) ride.
As for Malaysia, it was placed between Levels 3 and 5 along with Singapore and came with a price tag of 300 Japanese Yen (approx. RM9) per bowl of ramen.
In the comments, it was revealed that the ramen eatery was “Gyumon Ramen”, where it serves up halal ramen across several outlets in Tokyo.
M’sians react to ranking
The post was later crossposted to the Malaysia subreddit r/Malaysia, where netizens gave their thoughts on the ranking.
One netizen called Malaysia’s ranking a “joke” as he believed it was much higher. In response, another said that Malaysia was a multicultural country and pointed out that not everyone’s able to handle the heat on a regular basis.
Another noted that a handful of Chinese Malaysians generally have low spice tolerance, which may have contributed to Malaysia being ranked in the middle.
Meanwhile, some agreed with the menu’s ranking particularly Indonesia’s, where a netizen recounted how he suffered stomach cramps, endless sweating, and diarrhea the entire night.
