Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi paid her respects at the Kuala Lumpur Japanese Cemetery and National Monument yesterday (Oct 26) in conjunction with her visit for the 47th ASEAN Summit and 28th ASEAN–Japan Summit.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Takaichi said she was deeply moved by the opportunity to honour those who died in Malaysia, noting that the visit allowed her to reflect on the shared history between both nations.
Today, I visited the Kuala Lumpur Japanese Cemetery and laid flowers at the memorial monument. I was deeply moved to be able to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in Malaysia.”

Visited National Monument
Takaichi also visited the National Monument (Tugu Negara), which commemorates soldiers and civilians who died during World War I, World War II and Malaysia’s struggle for independence.
“I also visited the National Monument, which is dedicated to consoling the souls of soldiers and civilians who sacrificed their lives in the two World Wars and during the fight for Malaysia’s independence.

“It inspired me to think even more deeply about Malaysia’s history,” she added.
Following the memorial visit, Takaichi met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as part of her official programme for the ASEAN and ASEAN–Japan summit sessions.
