According to the latest survey conducted by Dentsu Japan, Japan has been voted the world’s most desired travel destination to revisit, with a remarkable 34.6% of the vote.
This places Japan far ahead of second-place Singapore, which garnered 14.7% of the votes.
The survey highlights the success of Japan’s renowned hospitality, though travelers’ preferences remain concentrated on popular destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
Survey with 7,500 participants
The survey collected responses from 7,500 participants across 15 countries, offering a multiple-choice format.
Following Japan and Singapore, the United States, South Korea, and the United Kingdom rounded out the top five, with 13%, 10.5%, and 10.4% of the votes, respectively.
The questionnaire also inquired about travelers’ most anticipated experiences when visiting Japan.
The top response was “local cuisine,” accounting for 28.6% of the answers. This was followed by “unique culture distinct from other countries” at 27.9%, and “natural landscapes unavailable elsewhere” at 25.6%.
Affordable Japanese restaurants topped the list of “must-spend experiences” for travelers in Japan, with 41.4% of respondents expressing this preference.
Tokyo take the lead
The survey also assessed the popularity of various regions within Japan among international tourists.
Tokyo led with 55.6%, followed by Osaka at 46.4%, Kyoto at 43.3%, Hiroshima at 36.9%, and Hokkaido at 35.1%. These top five regions have remained unchanged since 2016.
Additionally, respondents expressed concerns about visiting less popular areas, with “language barriers” and “unfamiliarity with local attractions” being the primary worries.
While these lesser-known regions hold significant potential for attracting tourists, providing adequate foreign language services and effectively communicating information to international visitors remain challenges that need to be addressed.
