A family was recently spotted having a full-on picnic right on the stairs of a famous shopping mall in KL and not everyone is okay with it.
The incident came to light after the netizen posted about witnessing a family laying out a meal directly on the steps of the park.
She described the scene as “inappropriate,” especially given how public the location was.
“Not everything needs to be normalised”
In a follow-up, the woman voiced her concerns, saying such actions shouldn’t be seen as normal, and urged others to avoid casually turning unsuitable public spots into personal picnic zones.
Don’t make it a habit to dine in inappropriate spots. There are proper areas to chill or eat.”
She added that there are better options nearby, like Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, which are more suitable for picnics.
Besides disrupting the aesthetics of the park, she said it might also leave a bad impression on foreign visitors, potentially harming TRX’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.

“Don’t treat public spaces like your own home”
Her post sparked agreement among many Malaysians, who also felt that inconsiderate behaviour in public areas should not be “normalised.”
If there’s no enforcement or complaints, people will just keep doing it. The problem will only get worse.”
It’s a free, public space — yes, but there are limits. There’s seating there but only a limited amount. When it gets crowded, we need to share, not hog it. Facilities like toilets are already well-maintained — let’s all do our part too.”
Lack of public picnic spaces?
Others saw the situation as a symptom of a bigger problem: the lack of suitable green spaces in Malaysia.
People wouldn’t be sitting on staircases if there were enough parks and picnic areas to go around. Look at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa — it’s already overcrowded.”

Some netizens called on local authorities to take the issue more seriously to prevent further deterioration of public spaces.
However, others believed it wasn’t wrong at all, arguing that security didn’t intervene, so it must have been allowed.

Some felt it was acceptable if only one or two people were eating there, but not an entire group.
