Aside from being huge lovers of consuming food, Malaysians are also known for their penchant in cooking up some of the most convoluted and bizarre food creations based on other cultures.
A pair of Italian content creators recently released a video capturing their sheer horror and shock over a clip of how an ‘apam balik pizza’ was being made by a stall in KL.
Italian content creators react to ‘apam balik pizza’
In a 24-second TikTok video shared by @lionfieldmusic, which consists of duo Matteo Salvatori and Emiliano Santoro, it showed them expressing horror, with Matteo exclaiming, “Apam balik pizza?!” and Emiliano asking why the word ‘pizza’ was even included in the first place.

As the duo continued to watch how the food was made, their level of bewilderment only grew each second as they saw tons of shredded cheese being piled on top of the apam balik.
When the video showed tomato sauce being added to the apam balik, Matteo noted that it was now using pizza sauce…except that it wasn’t on a pizza, prompting Emiliano to quip, “So it’s just sauce.”
However, what pushed the duo past their tipping point was when the ‘apam balik pizza’ was topped with several slices of pepperoni, causing Emiliano to say “I quit” before walking out from the camera’s frame.

‘Insulted 2 countries with one video’
The clip has since garnered 2.1 million views at the time of writing along with thousands of comments from netizens who were amused by the Italian duo’s (rightfully) horrified reaction.
Some joked that countries such as Indonesia and Italy had been insulted in a single video.

Even Malaysians themselves found it hard to justify the creation of ‘apam balik pizza’, with one noting that he didn’t like “where it was going.”

Many also suggested the Italian duo to go search up on ‘laksa Johor’ if they thought ‘apam balik pizza’ was a visual and culinary massacre. (Pro-tip: don’t!)
