With 2026 having officially begun, many are hoping that the new year would hold positive and prosperous events in store for them, with some turning to fortune tellers to have a glimpse of the future.
In Thailand, what started off as a normal fortune telling session quickly evolved into accusations of theft after a fortune teller was found in possession of his client’s iPhone.
Predicted loss of “something valuable”
According to Khaosod, the fortune teller was identified as Udomsap Mueangkaew, who wore clothes to make him look like an old man and sat on a mat opposite Wat Chaimongkol.

While he was calling out at passersby to come use his fortune-telling services on Jan 1, a woman named Pim approached him out of pity.
During the session, Udomsap predicted that Pim will lose “something valuable” and have bad luck. He then advised her to pay some money to ward it off but Pim declined as she felt it wasn’t necessary.
Loses iPhone, later finds it on fortune teller
After the session, Pim left and discovered her iPhone 13 Pro worth 20,000 baht (approx. RM2,500) had gone missing.

When she went back to the fortune teller, Udomsap told her to take it a sign of his “accurate” prediction and even described how the thief looked like in great detail.
However, Pim felt something was off and immediately contacted rescue workers and members of the public to check Udomsap’s belongings.
When they did, they found Pim’s iPhone in his bag and police were subsequently called.

Admitted to theft
When questioned by police, Udomsap confessed to the theft and said he stole the iPhone as he needed money for New Year.
He also claimed it was his first offense and apologised to Pim while pleading with her not to press charges.
However, she refused as she wanted to protect others from getting scammed by Udomsap. He was eventually taken into custody along with his fortune-telling equipment.
