Indonesian Woman’s Face Cut By Flying Glass After Rock Smashes Train Window During Jogja–Surabaya Night Ride

All was calm until someone decided to throw a rock.
The noise wasn’t loud, but it was sharp enough to leave scars.

For two passengers on the KA Sancaka night train, a rock through the window turned a routine trip into something they’d never forget.

“I was just reading and suddenly there was blood”

What began as a quiet night ride on July 6, 2025, took a terrifying turn for Widya Anggraini, a 30-year-old passenger from Sidoarjo, East Java.

She was onboard Train 88F Sancaka, en route from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, when the unexpected happened.

“I was listening to music and reading a book when I heard a loud crash,” she shared in a video posted to Instagram shortly after the incident.

In an instant, shards of glass from a shattered window sliced across her face and neck.

Crew members rushed to help, relocating her to the back of the carriage and trying to stop the bleeding.

“They cleaned the wounds with cloth, but blood kept coming out of my neck,” she said. “There were glass shards stuck to my face and neck that had to be removed.”

“It felt calm… until it wasn’t”

Before the rock hit, Widya described the train ride as peaceful and ordinary. But everything changed in a split second.

In her video caption, she wrote:

Taking a night train from Jogja to Surabaya. Everything was peaceful, until suddenly… BRAK! A rock was thrown at the carriage window from outside.”

Startled, she instinctively jumped from her seat. While she managed to move quickly, the emotional impact lingered.

This really made me realise, safety can disappear in a second. And sometimes, you have to be the one to act first.”

She ended her post by reminding others to stay alert during long-distance travel:

“Stay safe, friends, especially when traveling far.”

Widya’s video quickly went viral on Instagram, with viewers expressing shock over how such an incident could happen on a regular passenger train.

The clip sparked a wave of concern and frustration, particularly around the safety of night train services in Indonesia.

It didn’t take long for the post to catch the attention of Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the country’s railway operator.

“We’re sorry this happened”—KAI responds after backlash

Responding publicly through their official account @kai121, KAI issued an apology and promised to ensure Widya received full medical care.

Good evening, Kak Widya. Railmin sincerely apologises for the discomfort and the incident that occurred during your journey with KA Sancaka (88F). We are very concerned and regret this happened.”

They explained that medical officers from Operational Area 6 had already provided treatment and that their Surabaya team (Operational Area 8) would continue supporting her recovery.

What KAI says they’ll do to prevent this from happening again

Alongside their apology, KAI outlined several measures they would take in response to the rock-throwing incident:

  • Increase patrols along high-risk train routes
  • Install more surveillance cameras
  • Coordinate with local police and communities
  • Track down the perpetrator and hand them over to authorities

They also stressed that this case was being taken seriously and that ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority.
