Recently, Malaysians from the Chinese community observed the Qing Ming Festival, where they would pay a visit to their ancestors’ tombs to clean the gravesites and give offerings.
Unfortunately for a 57-year-old man, this year’s Qing Ming Festival proved to be his last after he unexpectedly collapsed and died after completing the necessary rites.
Travelled from Penang to Kedah for Qing Ming
According to Guang Ming Daily and China Press, the victim, Ye Jincai (transliteration), had travelled from Penang to the Hang Kang Society South Kedah cemetery in Kulim, Kedah on Mar 28 for Qing Ming.

There, Ye began burning joss paper but accidentally caused a small fire in the process, prompting volunteer firefighters to be called to the scene.
Thankfully, the fire was put out quickly and firefighters noted that Ye was still conscious and able to speak at the time.

Not long after, Ye packed up his belongings and began climbing up the slope as his ancestor’s grave was located at the bottom of the hill.
Dies after saying he was tired
During the climb, Ye showed signs of exhaustion but repeatedly refused assistance from the firefighters.
However, the exhaustion proved to be too much for him, where he resorted to using his hands to climb up the slope.
Ye then sat down and said: “I’m so tired, I don’t want to come for Qing Ming again next year.”

Not long after those words left his mouth, Ye collapsed and firefighters began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him.
Sadly, Ye was later pronounced dead after he was rushed to the hospital.
