Illegal M’sian Taxi Driver Charges Tourists RM225 For Trip From KLIA To KL, Claims He Needed The Extra Money

JPJ reminded the public to only use legitimate transport services.
A 59-year-old man who had been secretly ferrying passengers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for the past three years finally ran out of luck.

On Oct 4, he was arrested by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers at KLIA Terminal 2 after allegedly trying to convince six Belgian tourists to ride in his Toyota Vellfire.

The trip to their hotel in Kuala Lumpur city centre would have cost them RM225 — far above the usual ride-hailing rates.

Claimed he just wanted ‘extra income’

According to Harian Metro, the man reportedly told enforcement officers that he was “just trying to earn a little extra income.”

Selangor JPJ director Azlin Borhan said the arrest followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance at KLIA Terminal 2.

A Toyota Vellfire and the driver were both seized for further investigation.

Checks revealed that the man possessed a valid driving licence and that the vehicle was registered under his own name.

JPJ reminds travellers to use official services

Azlin reminded the public to only use legitimate transport services — either through the official counters inside both KLIA terminals or via licensed e-hailing apps.

He stressed that illegal taxi operations are a serious offence under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

Those convicted could face a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both.

Not too long ago, a similar incident happened when a pair of tourists from China were threatened and held against their will over an exorbitant taxi fare:
