Malaysians can now choose to save on their electricity bills by applying for Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff scheme, which offers cheaper rates during off-peak hours.
What is the ToU scheme?
The ToU scheme is an optional electricity tariff plan that lets you pay different rates depending on the time of day you use electricity.

Under this scheme, electricity is more expensive during peak hours and cheaper during off-peak hours.
This allows households and businesses to reduce their bills by adjusting their energy consumption habits.
Unlike the standard flat-rate tariff, ToU gives users more control over their electricity costs.
It’s ideal for people who can shift energy-heavy tasks like laundry, cooking, or business operations to cheaper time slots.
Peak and off-peak time slots
TNB has divided the day into two time slots:
- Monday to Friday:
• Peak hours: 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm
• Off-peak hours: 10.00 pm to 2.00 pm (next day) - Weekends & public holidays:
• Off-peak applies for 24 hours
This means users who mostly use electricity at night or on weekends could see noticeable savings on their bills.
You can learn more about the schedule at TNB’s tariff info page.

Here’s a breakdown for households:
Monthly usage | Normal Tariff | ToU Peak | ToU Off-Peak |
---|---|---|---|
≤1,500 kWh | 27.03 sen/kWh | 28.52 sen/kWh | 24.43 sen/kWh |
>1,500 kWh | 37.03 sen/kWh | 38.52 sen/kWh | 34.43 sen/kWh |
So, even though the peak ToU rate is slightly higher than the normal rate, you can offset it by using more electricity during off-peak hours.
