With the government revising the Sales and Service Tax (SST) structure from July 1, many Malaysians were concerned if daily essentials would get more expensive.
But don’t worry, the Ministry of Finance has confirmed that basic goods will continue to enjoy 0% SST. This includes common groceries, baby items, medicines, and even religious products.
Here’s a breakdown of what remains SST-free:

- Catfish, tilapia, tongkol, anchovies
- Cockles, prawns, squid
- Fresh milk, eggs (chicken/duck/quail)
- Potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumber

- Garlic, onions, ginger
- Coconut (young & mature), coffee beans
- Tea, black pepper, spices
- Barley, oats, wheat, rice, corn
- Wheat flour, rice flour, sago flour

- Sunflower seeds, rubber seeds, agar-agar
- Palm oil, margarine, canned sardines
- Sambal ikan bilis, fish paste, fish balls
- Fish sausages, sugar, pasta

- Milo, UHT flavoured milk
- Instant noodles, white bread
- Mixed vegetables, soy sauce, kaya
- Yeast, chilli/tomato/oyster sauce
- Belacan, tofu, tempeh, ice cubes

- Oxygen tanks, medication, eye drops
- Bandages, antiseptic wipes, first-aid kits
- Prayer mats, tasbih, joss sticks, joss paper

The revised Sales Tax only targets selected and premium items at a rate of 5% or 10%. This includes truffle mushrooms, racing bicycles, and king crab.
- 5% SST: Truffle mushrooms, king crab, lobster, bird’s nest, horse meat, abalone
- 10% SST: Racing bicycles, antique art, high-end goods
- Tuna, salmon, and cod will now fall under the 5% SST category
