A mother’s grief knows no bounds — and in this case, it was a wild elephant seen mourning her baby who had just been tragically killed in a road accident.
A sorrowful encounter unfolded in the early hours of the morning along the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik-Jeli, where a baby elephant was fatally hit by a lorry transporting chickens.
Berita Harian reported that the collision, which occurred at around 2.50am, left the young calf dead on the spot.
According to Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood, a 28-year-old driver was en route from Gerik to Jeli when he noticed a large elephant grazing by the roadside.
Moments later, a smaller elephant suddenly emerged from the opposite side of the forest and attempted to cross the road.
Due to the extremely short distance, the driver couldn’t avoid the collision and ended up hitting the baby elephant, which died on the spot,” Zulkifli said in a statement.
The aftermath took a heart-wrenching turn when an adult elephant — believed to be the mother — reacted aggressively.
Enraged and in distress, she rammed the lorry, damaging its front portion. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed.

Sabar Jah semoga dipertemukan semula anakmu di syurga nanti. Aamiin Ya Rabbal Alamin,” katanya. Sementara itu, Pengarah Jabatan Perlindungan Hidupan Liar dan Taman Negara (Perhilitan) Perak, Yusoff Shariff ketika dihubungi berkata, pihaknya menerima maklumat kejadian itu pada pukul 3.30 pagi. Katanya, kejadian membabitkan seekor anak gajah jantan dianggarkan berusia lima tahun yang mati selepas dipercayai dilanggar sebuah lori ketika melintas jalan. “Kakitangan Perhilitan telah ke lokasi kejadian bagi membuat pemantauan. Operasi sedang dijalankan bagi menangkap ibu gajah terlebih dahulu untuk dialihkan dari lokasi kejadian. Karkas anak gajah yang dibawa keluar dari bawah lori itu akan dilupuskan dengan kaedah tanam,” katanya. – KOSMO! The authorities were quick to contact the Wildlife and National Parks Department (PERHILITAN), who later arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
Refused to leave her baby for over 5 hours
According to NST, PERHILITAN officers faced a difficult challenge when the mother elephant refused to leave her calf’s side for more than five hours.
The baby had become pinned under the vehicle during the collision and did not survive.
Due to the risk posed to passing vehicles and road users, the officers were forced to sedate the grieving mother before carefully escorting her back to the forest.
Perak PERHILITAN director Yusoff Shariff confirmed that the department received the alert about the incident around 3.30am and deployed a team to the scene to manage the situation.
