Gov’t Considering Housing Projects Above Train Stations To Tackle Traffic Jam, Says PM Anwar

The plan will also include commercial properties, not just public housing.
The Malaysian government is currently exploring a proposal to build residential units above train stations in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in urban areas, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced.

Speaking at the “Transport for the People: Balancing Public Transport Affordability, Quality and Sustainability” forum, Anwar said the initiative is being reviewed in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

“This means people’s housing projects will be constructed above train stations. The plan will also include commercial properties, not just public housing,” he said.

“This is one of the ways we’re working to reduce traffic congestion.”

Anwar also touched on another element of the Madani City concept: the introduction of vertical schools — educational institutions built within high-rise structures.

Design with strict safety standards

He assured that these schools will be designed with strict safety standards, and will feature better infrastructure than many conventional schools.

Initially, parents may worry their children could fall from such heights. But when they live in high-rise apartments, there’s no issue. So I don’t understand the hesitation when it comes to vertical schools,” he remarked.

In Putrajaya, plans are underway to implement vertical schools where parking areas are located on lower levels, followed by residential zones, and schools placed on the upper floors.

Dedicated elevators will also be included for school use, allowing direct access to specific floors such as kindergartens and primary schools.

10,000 housing units in Penang Madani City

Anwar added that the Madani City project will be expanded to Penang, with 10,000 housing units planned across Sungai Ara and Batu Kawan.

The project will also integrate vertical schools, fire stations, and clinics, allowing residents to access essential services without incurring extra travel costs.

The overall goal, Anwar said, is to create sustainable and accessible communities where infrastructure and services are built around the needs of the people.
