For many Malaysian students, finishing SPM is a huge milestone. All those long hours of studying and exams are finally over.
But once the excitement fades, a bigger question kicks in. What’s next?

If you’re feeling unsure about your next step, you’re not alone. Many students go through the same phase after SPM, especially when there are so many options out there. The good news is, you don’t need to have everything figured out immediately.
Here are a few simple things you can think about to help you move forward with more clarity.
1. Start with what you actually enjoy

Before jumping into any course or programme, take a step back and reflect on what you genuinely like.
Think about the subjects you enjoyed in school, the ones you didn’t mind studying for, and the kind of activities that naturally interest you. Are you more into numbers, creativity, communication, or problem-solving?
Understanding your strengths and interests can help you avoid choosing something just because others are doing it.
2. Think about where you want to go

It might feel early, but having a rough idea of your future goals can help narrow down your options.
Do you see yourself studying overseas, or would you prefer to stay local? Are you aiming for a specific career, or still exploring?
Different pathways can lead to different destinations, so having even a general direction can make decision-making easier.
3. Consider your costs and support

Education can be a big investment, so it helps to have a clear idea of the costs involved.
Take some time to look into tuition fees, living expenses, and whether there are scholarships or financial aid available. Planning ahead can make things feel less stressful and help you choose a path that works well for both you and your family.
4. Explore the different study pathways available

After SPM, you’ll find that there are many different pathways to choose from, each offering its own structure and outcomes.
Some options are more academic and exam-based, while others focus more on practical skills or offer faster routes into the workforce.
There are also programmes designed for students who plan to study overseas, as well as those who prefer to continue locally.
Understanding how these pathways differ can help you make a choice that better fits your goals and learning style.
5. Talk to people and experience it for yourself
Sometimes, the best way to decide is by getting real insights from people who have been through it.

Speak to academic counsellors, seniors, or even friends who are already in college or university. Better yet, attend open days or campus events where you can explore your options, ask questions, and get a feel of the environment.
It can make a big difference when you see things in person instead of just reading about them online.
Still unsure? Here’s where you can explore everything in one place

If you’re still figuring things out, the upcoming Sunway College & Sunway University Open Day is the perfect opportunity to connect the dots.
Students and parents can speak directly with academic advisors, explore programmes and pathways, and see real examples of what each option offers. This makes it easier to find a path that matches your goals, learning style, and future plans.
Explore different pathways based on your goals
At Sunway College and Sunway University, students have access to a wide variety of programmes to suit different interests and learning preferences. Take a look at some of the programmes offered:

The programme maintains a 100% pass rate, with more than half of students achieving straight A* or A grades.
It has also produced 78 offers from the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge between 2010 and 2025, alongside 580 recipients of the Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards as of November 2025, reflecting its strong academic track record.
Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT)
A fast-tracked, globally recognised pre-university programme, AUSMAT at Sunway College is both the largest provider in the world and Malaysia’s top-performing AUSMAT college.
Backed by nearly 40 years of excellence, the programme has earned 137 international awards, with 58% of students achieving an ATAR score of 80 and above. It provides a direct pathway to universities in Australia and other countries worldwide.
Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP)
Sunway College offers Malaysia’s only licensed Canadian pre-university programme, accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
CIMP features a 70% coursework and 30% examination structure, making it suitable for students who prefer continuous assessment. About 60% of students achieve Ontario Scholar status, with pathways to universities in Canada, the US, the UK, and beyond.
Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY)
Exclusively offered in Malaysia by Sunway College, MUFY provides a direct pathway to Monash University, which is ranked among the top 50 universities globally in the QS World University Rankings 2026.
Since its introduction in 1999, the programme has supported over 20,000 students in progressing to higher education, including entry into Monash and other leading universities worldwide.
Sunway University Foundation
Sunway’s homegrown foundation programme is designed to provide students with a strong academic head start into university life.
Offered through two pathways, Foundation in Arts (FIA) and Foundation in Science and Technology (FIST), it caters to different academic interests and career directions. Students can progress seamlessly into Sunway University, which has been ranked No.1 in Malaysia for graduate employability by Talentbank for five consecutive years.
Sunway Diploma Studies
Sunway’s diploma programmes offer a practical, skill-based pathway that can be completed within two to three years.
Covering fields such as business, accounting, finance, communication, design, culinary arts, nursing, and information technology, these programmes emphasise hands-on learning and industry-relevant skills. Graduates can either enter the workforce or continue their studies with seamless progression into a degree at Sunway University.
Professional Accounting (Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence, CAE)
Sunway TES is one of the leading professional accounting providers in the Asia Pacific region, offering programmes such as ACCA-FIA, ACCA, CFAB, and ICAEW.

Having nurtured more than 11,000 ACCA graduates and over 1,600 ICAEW graduates, it provides a strong foundation for those pursuing a career in finance and accounting.
American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) & American Degree Programme (ADP)
Sunway University offers flexible pathways through ADTP and ADP, allowing students to complete the first one to two years in Malaysia before transferring to universities overseas, including Arizona State University (ASU), or completing their degree locally using the same curriculum.
Based on the American education system, these programmes offer flexibility for students to explore different disciplines before choosing a major. ADP partners directly with ASU, which has been ranked the No.1 “Most Innovative University” in the US for 11 consecutive years, offering more than 20 transfer pathways and a balance of global exposure, flexibility, and cost efficiency.
Scholarships and financial support
Beyond academic pathways, Sunway also provides financial support to help students access quality education. To date, Sunway has awarded up to RM967 million in scholarships, easing the financial burden for students and their families.
