‘It’s Your Job!’ — M’sian Man Says GF Refuses To Pay Her Share For Their Trip & Future House

Walking red flag?
For couples, it’s only natural for both sides to contribute equally for all expenses, be it for household or personal purposes.

A man recently took to social media to lament about how his girlfriend verbally fought with him over having to pay her portion for a vacation and a house they were planning to purchase, even claiming that it was his responsibility.

In an anonymous post shared to XUAN’s Facebook page, the man wrote that he and his girlfriend often argued over matters concerning money and cited several instances which he felt was “serious”.

The first instance concerned a two-week trip to Japan, where he worked up a rough budget of RM28,000, which included flight tickets (RM5,000), accommodation (RM8,000), and the remaining RM15,000 for expenses.

When the man asked his girlfriend whether she would chip in, her reply left him baffled:

A boyfriend is supposed to pay for everything — otherwise, why go?”

After an argument that lasted close to two months, the man’s girlfriend eventually relented and agreed to pay RM2,500 for her own flight ticket, albeit begrudgingly.

As for the second instance, the man wrote he had hoped that his partner could help contribute to their future house’s mortgage by paying RM1,000 per month. Alas, she also refused, saying that it was the man’s responsibility to do so.

High-end tastes

The man also lamented over his girlfriend’s appetite for luxury and cited two anecdotes to prove his point.

“She wanted to buy a Mazda CX-5, which would cost her around RM1,500 per month in loan payments.

“I wasn’t too supportive of this decision because she only earns about RM6,000 a month. After EPF and taxes, she probably takes home just over RM5,000. With the car loan, it would be a big financial burden, but she insists that she can manage.”

Aside from the car, the man said his partner also expected to receive a high amount of dowry when they tie the knot in the future.

She thinks the dowry should be at least RM25,000, and with the wedding expenses, the total would be around RM150,000, bringing the overall cost to nearly RM200,000.

“I told her that if we spent all our money on the wedding, we’d have a hard time buying our dream home afterward. I’m a workaholic and I just want a comfortable home to rest in after a long day,” he wrote.

Stay or walk away?

Given his girlfriend’s behaviour, the man said he’s contemplating over whether he should cancel the supplementary credit card he gave to her, which she uses to spend around RM1,000 to RM1,300 monthly.

He also noted that their relationship had stagnated, adding that they “can’t seem to reach a mutual understanding”.
