A Malaysian couple living in Paris found themselves in an unexpectedly hilarious situation last December after their neighbour mistook the smell of durian for a dangerous gas leak and alerted the local fire department.
The couple, who had lived in the City of Love, Paris for five years before returning to Malaysia this September, shared how the entire incident unfolded in their apartment building.
Durian pulut session turns into full drama
Speaking exclusively to WeirdKaya, the wife told us that her husband had wanted to show their child how he usually enjoys durian with glutinous rice, coconut milk and sugar.
The plan was simple enough, but the smell quickly spread throughout the apartment corridor.
The aroma was so strong that a neighbour from the fifth floor reportedly walked past their door, caught a whiff and immediately assumed it was a gas leak.
He then raised the alarm and called the fire department for help.
Firefighters show up ready to handle a gas leak
Moments later, French firefighters arrived at the couple’s unit. The husband, panicking at the sight of them, told his wife to turn off the stove as he feared there might really be gas leaking somewhere.
But the wife knew exactly what the smell was. She told him, “There is no gas. This is just durian.”
Operation “clean everything before they notice”
Realising what actually caused the commotion, the husband quickly went into damage control.
He washed all the plates, threw away the plastic packaging and tied the trash bag as tightly as possible.
The couple opened all the windows and sprayed air freshener everywhere in hopes of clearing the smell.
In the video they recorded, the firefighters could be seen entering the apartment for a second round, sniffing around to identify the source of the odour.
After checking everything, they confirmed there was no gas leak. The gas meter even showed a flat zero.
It was, in fact, just a very powerful durian.
“We did not dare tell them it was durian”
The couple admitted they kept quiet about the real source of the smell because they were afraid they might get into trouble.
Looking back, they said the whole thing was funny and memorable, especially now that they are back home in Malaysia.
What started as a simple durian pulut session ended up becoming a full Parisian emergency response.
